‘He died in my arms’

Added: 2011-05-09 15:12:05

Mother’s Day will never be the same for this Cape Flats mom after her teen son died in her arms on what was meant to be a special day of love.

Heartbroken Desiree Reizenberg also celebrated her 38th birthday just hours before her 15-year-old son Clayton’s life came to a tragic end early on Sunday morning.

He was brutally stabbed by a gang of thieves who broke into a home where he was spending the night.

It was the first time the Delft teen had slept out of the house as he really wanted to attend a karaoke at his friend’s home in Syeboom Street, Rosendal.

“There was a karaoke party and Clayton wished me a happy birthday before leaving home,” explains an emotional Desiree.

“He gave me R15 and asked me to buy food for his birds which he loved.

“He came back home a few minutes later and asked me if he could sleep over [at his friend’s place].

“Then at 3am someone knocked at my door and said Clayton was stabbed.

“At Delft Day Hospital, I was holding him in my arms and he told me twice it was three men who stabbed him and that they broke into the house.

“He died in my arms while the doctor was examining him.

“He was a good son … it’s so hard to believe that he is gone.”

Within hours of the murder, cops successfully arrested two suspects, aged 23 and 25.

The men are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Cops say they believe Clayton surprised his attackers when they broke into the house.

“It is suspected the suspects gained entry from the back door,” says police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.

Van Wyk says police also retrieved a stolen item from the house and that one of the suspects was caught when he left his cap at the scene.

Police explain that Clayton was stabbed in the chest but managed to walk out of the house.

Clayton’s friend’s mother Allison Kristen, 46, who was not home when the stabbing occurred, describes rushing home to find her bedroom wall splattered with blood.

“I called my children at 2am because I felt something wasn’t right,” she says.

“Clayton was stabbed in my bedroom.

“This is tragic because he was like a son to me and he slept here for the first time.”
